Founded in 1525, Santa Marta is one of the oldest cities in South America and is a delight to visit. Museums, the lure of history, charming colonial architecture, and of course – Colombian coffee! – all are within a few blocks.
What should you definitely not miss when visiting Santa Marta? Here’s our short list of things to do in the city.
Explore historic Santa Marta
Santa Marta has beautiful cathedrals and Colonial architecture, so take some time to walk around and admire the sights.
If you’re a real history buff, visit Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino to see where the historical figure Simon Bolivar spent some time before his death. Stroll around the gardens on the property and admire the art at the museum for a leisurely afternoon.
When night falls, visit Parque de los Novios and check out the restaurants and cafés around the plaza.
Rodadero Beach
Although the best beaches are farther afield, Rodadero Beach is close to the city and is a good option if you’re pressed for time. Remember that it is a bit crowded on weekends.
Gold Museum
Explore the ancient cultures of the region through their art at the local Gold Museum. Centuries of stories are told through the carefully crafted gold pieces they left behind.
